If you still for some reason don’t believe that James Yancey is on par with any other person ever to touch a beat machine, House Shoes‘ upcoming mixtape The King James Version is further prove of the other-worldy talent and in particular  finely tuned  ear that Jay Dee possessed.

for those in the LA region, Shoes will be hosting a listening party for the mixtape this Saturday at the illustrious Fat Beats on Melrose. shenanigans start at 7pm, with the after party taking place at Carbon in Culver City.

The King James Version drops on January 9th.

Mixtape Review: Road to Til the Casket Drops

Clipse: Road to Till The Casket Drops

By: Rian Mills

As the New Year approaches and we are knee deep in the holiday spirit(s), the Clipse stay on their grind. Not only is their new clothing line, Play Cloths, in stores, they team up with Complex Magazine to drop one helluva mixtape in anticipation of an early 2009 album release; Road to Till The Casket Drops features the Clipse at their finest. Cocaine rap can definitely get tired, but this duo just does it so well, you can’t help but love it. As they flow effortlessly over tracks like ”Big Dreams”, ”Addiction”, and ”Numb It Down” you’ll find yourself pressing rewind trying to catch their double entendres and ridulous wordplay. Ab-Liva does his thing as he makes a couple of appearances on ”Pop Champagne” and ”S.L.U” with all three M.C.’s painting a vivid picture of their over-the-top lifestyle. ”The Haters Wish” and ”Feds Taking Pictures” are standout tracks, and there’s even a song for the ladies (in some respects) with ”So Fly (Now We’ve Had Her). This mixtape is nothing short of a gem, one that I’ll be bumping until their album drops, and as Pusha says himself, ”All we give you is classics…”. Peace.

Sinister strikes again!!!

The Empire and Lil Wayne the Drought is Over 6 The Reincarnation

O.K., Correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t Lil Wayne threaten to chop off your fuckin head for putting his unsanctioned shit out on an Empire Mixtape? If you need a reminder, refer to Issue #7 of Foundation Magazine or shit just listen to the last track to see how Lil Weezy feels about you dawg! These tracks are not worth the time it takes to make a mixtape, nor are they worth risking your neck over homie! If you were gonna say, “fuck it, I’m releasing my Lil Wayne shit anyway, regardless of what he says”, you should’ve chosen something better to drop. I had a hard time listening to this shit dawg. Harder then usual because I’m not a fan of Lil Wayne at all. This was definitely work writing this review. Empire has lost it’s credibility with me. I feel sorry for my partner who was o.d.ing on arizona energy drinks just to keep from falling asleep so she could get her work done while I painfully listened to this bullshit ass mixtape. My apologies sweetie. Don’t go out and buy this mixtape, unless you’re a DIEHARD Lil Wayne fan!!!

We would like to introduce all of you to our newest writer. “Sinister”. He is a rogue mixtape reviewer he writes whatever the fuck he wants to without regard to any of our opinions. He is able to do so because the big homie has been listening to Hip Hop since the early eighties and will school any of you. If your mad or disagree with what he writes, dont email us as there is nothing we can do about it! Check out Sinister every Monday where he will shit all over your favorite mixtape.

Track 19 - A Message to the DJs

So I’ve probably listened to Dedication 3 in its entirety about 3 or 4 times, and its not bad. I will say this: the sound quality is above and beyond almost every other mixtape that I listen to, the levels are good and this makes it more listenable right off the bat. In fact, it listens more like an album than a mixtape. Its also got Wayne’s Young Money roster featured on a few of the songs, which range from good to terrible. And as far as terrible goes, Tyga is about as bad as it gets. He’s doing good at ripping off Wayne’s whole “style”, the clothes, the rock star look and all that, but the lyrics are about as bad as it gets. He needs to quit.

But this isn’t intended to be a full length review (check Issue 9 for that), more just a commentary about the track that we’d been waiting for over here…track 19. When we did our Wayne interview some time ago, and he said what he said about mixtapes and DJs, we put it out there because it was important, and because it fit the mission of the magazine. We ARE the mixtape magazine after all. So, it would probably be unfair to let this pass without even giving a nod to Wayne. Even though he came out on the radio and tried to clean it up quickly after it happened, this interlude being on Dedication 3 makes it more official. And to tell the truth (and this is just my opinion, not necessarily that of the magazine), he pretty much said what I thought he really meant to say all along. (more…)
