Joell Ortiz - Covers The Classics

coverstheclassics1

Download here

Joell Ortiz is one ill MC. He takes some of our favorite joints from back in the day and goes the fuck in! My boy Eddie and I often talk about the rappers out today and one of the questions he asks is “Could this rapper have been successful in the eighties? The nineties??” Its a perfect question if you ask me. Joell Ortiz has proved on this tape that he could have hung with the best of them from any era. That is serious people. Ask yourself, can Red Cafe, Uncle Murda, Gucci Mane, or any of these other guys done that? I dunno, its a good question………………..

J. Period & Q-Tip: The [Abstract] Best

abstract

J. Period has done it again, this time scoring big with The [Abstract] Best. In case you aren’t familiar with any of J’s mixtapes, he puts out Best of tapes and compilations for some of the greatest artists in hip-hop, and also releases tapes in conjunction with some up-and-comers.  Among the best of his Best of’s, I’d have to pick the Best of Nas, Best of Big Daddy Kane, Best of Lauryn Hill, and Best of the Roots. The Isley Brothers tape he did was hot too, but as far as hip-hop goes, the rest are untouchable. Like, you lose your copy of it and start sweating because the shit is that memorable.

So when this tape dropped, I wasted no time in downloading it and putting it on CD for a ride to Connecticut I had to take. I listened to it four times, all in a row. The verdict? Unparalleled excellence at all levels. Taking some of the best cuts from Tip’s Tribe days, his solo stuff, and cuts from Native Tongues crew members, he weaves it all together with mini-interviews, phone messages and flawless transitions. The tape is worth the listen just for the storytelling narrative that Q-Tip provides, explaining how some of the tracks were made and his views on life and music.

It is easy and trendy (and also lazy writing) nowadays to decry the lack of knowledge that hip-hop’s new generation has of their predecessors, and to cite this as the cause for all the garbage music that we hear. This tape gives us an insight into something deeper though, as Q-Tip emphasizes over and over again that making music was all about having fun, spirited competition, and getting down.  This should be essential listening for everyone who loves hip-hop, because J. Period and Q-Tip manage to boil down all the nonsense and complications into a tape that is not only enlightening, but also supremely listenable (even on repeat).

Papoose - 21 Gun Salute

papoose_21_gun_salute-front-large

Papoose is back with 22 tracks of new music. I remember a few year’s ago I was sitting with some of my homies and we were playing poker and I was arguing back and forth with a few of them about how Papoose was dumb nice lyrically, which he was. He lit us on fire with mixtape heat in 2006, all year long. Since then? Not so much. Had the fortunate 1.5 million dollar deal with Jive that turned out to be unfortunate. A record deal gone wrong and noticeably forced singles killed his buzz. While this mixtape has a few heaters on it, overall it leaves me wishing someone would bring Pap back. DJ Roberob produced “Hat under my hood” which Pap flows over nicely, but the beat outshines the bars. Dirty York shit is a great east coast grimy beat produced by TY Sticks that Pap flows over the way we like hearing him flow spitting heat rock. Track 10, “All That” is just simply horrible. It’s as if  he was TRYING to make a bad record. Unfortunately it does not look like this mixtape is gonna bring Pap back.

Mixtape Review: Road to Til the Casket Drops

Clipse: Road to Till The Casket Drops

By: Rian Mills

As the New Year approaches and we are knee deep in the holiday spirit(s), the Clipse stay on their grind. Not only is their new clothing line, Play Cloths, in stores, they team up with Complex Magazine to drop one helluva mixtape in anticipation of an early 2009 album release; Road to Till The Casket Drops features the Clipse at their finest. Cocaine rap can definitely get tired, but this duo just does it so well, you can’t help but love it. As they flow effortlessly over tracks like ”Big Dreams”, ”Addiction”, and ”Numb It Down” you’ll find yourself pressing rewind trying to catch their double entendres and ridulous wordplay. Ab-Liva does his thing as he makes a couple of appearances on ”Pop Champagne” and ”S.L.U” with all three M.C.’s painting a vivid picture of their over-the-top lifestyle. ”The Haters Wish” and ”Feds Taking Pictures” are standout tracks, and there’s even a song for the ladies (in some respects) with ”So Fly (Now We’ve Had Her). This mixtape is nothing short of a gem, one that I’ll be bumping until their album drops, and as Pusha says himself, ”All we give you is classics…”. Peace.

Sinister strikes again!!!

The Empire and Lil Wayne the Drought is Over 6 The Reincarnation

O.K., Correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t Lil Wayne threaten to chop off your fuckin head for putting his unsanctioned shit out on an Empire Mixtape? If you need a reminder, refer to Issue #7 of Foundation Magazine or shit just listen to the last track to see how Lil Weezy feels about you dawg! These tracks are not worth the time it takes to make a mixtape, nor are they worth risking your neck over homie! If you were gonna say, “fuck it, I’m releasing my Lil Wayne shit anyway, regardless of what he says”, you should’ve chosen something better to drop. I had a hard time listening to this shit dawg. Harder then usual because I’m not a fan of Lil Wayne at all. This was definitely work writing this review. Empire has lost it’s credibility with me. I feel sorry for my partner who was o.d.ing on arizona energy drinks just to keep from falling asleep so she could get her work done while I painfully listened to this bullshit ass mixtape. My apologies sweetie. Don’t go out and buy this mixtape, unless you’re a DIEHARD Lil Wayne fan!!!
